The new year brings a new season of trends, which can broaden our horizons to introducing fresh colours and designs into our homes that we previously might not consider. With the launch of Pinterest’s trend predictions for 2024, we can’t help but keep our eyes on how these trends will foray into the style zeitgeist and eventually, our homes.

While it is not always wise to allow trends to exclusively dictate every aesthetic aspect of our homes, we definitely recommend taking cues from different design styles, eras, and trends. Make sure to follow the official House & Garden SA Pinterest for the latest trends and inspiring aesthetics to introduce to your own space.

Pick up Retro Appliances for the ‘Kitschen’

According to Pinterest, “they say the party always moves to the kitchen. But sometimes, the party is the kitchen. This year, Gen X and Boomers will quirk up their cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances and eye-jarring pops of paint. No minimalist aesthetic is safe”.

Flow with Aquatic Architecture

“It’s time to trade up the fish bowl. This year, Gen X and Millennials will become undersea gardeners and go all in on "small aquarium designs" and over-the-top "turtle terrariums." In 2024, aquatic architecture will be the hot new way to style a home. Your guppies will be living large,” says Pinterest in this year’s trends report.

Cafécore and At-Home Coffee Stations

We are true fans of the at-home coffee connoisseur from sporting a deluxe espresso machine, specialist coffee beans, or simply taking the time to make your favourite coffee beverage at home. With that being said, coffee bars and coffee set ups are set to replace the snazzy bar cart.

“Bar carts, be gone. In 2024, at-home coffee stations will become the new way to espresso yourself. Boomers and Gen X will bring the coffee shop vibe inside, searching for everything from "cafe chalkboard" aesthetic and "coffee station decor" to "coffee bar styling." Your go-to cuppa just got a serious upgrade,” says Pinterest.

Jazz Revival

Last year, we featured a story on the rise of listening rooms, a space where music takes centre stage, undisturbed and uninterrupted. With Gen Z gaining an ear for all things Jazz and funk, keep an eye out for ideas for creating your own listening room at home.

In 2024, Millennials and Gen Z will trade in their electronic beats for something far more retro: vintage jazz. This trend extends beyond funk playlists: Jazz-inspired outfits, dimly lit venues and lo-fi looks are all on the rise. Take notes as the younger generation looks to the past to make this saxxy aesthetic their own. Because everything old really is new again.
