Kenzo’s wow-factor designs are the perfect fit for
Roche Bobois’ signature Mah Jong sofa, which is upholstered in fabrics from the
Nogaku collection. The designer created three variations of this that express
gentleness, vivacity, and depth each coinciding with the different times of
day: ‘Asa’ (morning), ‘Hiru’ (midday), and ‘Yoru’ (evening).
“From the outset, I wanted to use inspiration
from the patterns found on kimonos, specifically the weaving used for the Noh
theatres,’ explains Kenzo. ‘These designs and patterns were the guidelines of
this collection for Roche Bobois – but I wanted to completely change their
colours and interpret them in a new way.’
But Kenzo didn’t stop there – he has also
created a range of curious and beautiful objects as part of the range. From Aka
Hanawa vases in hand-turned red clay earthenware, coated with deep-colour
enamels and enhanced by aged gold or glossy red copper leaf to matching
hand-tufted Gara rug, Kenzo’s collection is the perfect combination of Japanese
refinement and a certain French savoir-faire.
