Spier Wine Estate opens its new Farm Kitchen for picnic-style alfresco feasting this summer

Despite it being a dull, cloudy day in Stellenbosch, our spirits weren’t dampened at the opening of Spier’s new Farm Kitchen – a country-style offering featuring farm fresh, organic produce in a relaxed setting. The idea is simple: customise your picnic basket, choosing from fresh daily fare prepared by executive chef Lolli Heyns and her team. Using seasonal produce grown organically in the Werf Food Garden, as well as ingredients from trusted local suppliers, you’re spoilt for choice with nutritious, farm-inspired food.

From rotisserie chicken, home baked pies and sandwiches (try roast vegetable and pesto, or Farmer Angus’ roast beef with aioli) made with wood-fired Hoghouse bread, to ‘build your own salads’ at the salad station, it’s a nod to Spier’s farm-to-table and sustainability-centred ethos. Delight in the range of healthier sweet products that substitute refined sugars with natural ones – think fig balls and citrus almond cake. To drink, choose from the selection of Spier wines, juices, ciders and beer, as well as coffee to go.

‘We meticulously restored the Werf so that it could once more become a hub of activity – where agriculture, artisan food and creativity find expression,’ says Mariota Enthoven, Spier’s family owner. ‘The opening of the Spier Farm Kitchen, which is housed in a more than 200-year-old building overlooking this historic farmyard, is the latest step in bringing this dream to life.’

The take-home deli selection includes Farmer Angus’ pasture-reared products: eggs, biltong, bone broth as well as chicken, pork and beef. You can also order your pre-made picnic basket online, with child-friendly and vegan options available if ordered 24-hours in advance. Throw down a blanket and lounge on the lawn, soaking in the summer sun and tranquil and historic farm setting.
