Be bold with your choice of decor in a central room of the house…

Bright New World

The showstopper kitchen in interior designer Sarah Ord’s home is painted a punchy red with a striking chandelier. African-inspired colour and a colonial sense of history make for a space that warmly welcomes you in.

Victorian Joy

The compact terrace combines a Victorian checkerboard floor and colourful prints.

Sunshine Palette

A former dairy in Cape Town combines a cheerful palette and country appeal with cherished pieces. The rustic kitchen is painted in daffodil yellow.

The Sum of Parts

In Bantry Bay, designer Mario Rodrigues creates an artfully composed home through timeless but eclectic pieces and precision tailoring that’s all about elegant comfort. The kitchen here functions very much as a living room, with art hanging above the work surfaces. The island unit was painted a different colour to the units so as to appear more as a piece of furniture. A contemporary rug from MP Rugs strikes a cool graphic note.

African Inspiration

This Franschhoek home draws on the warm earthy tones of Africa, infused with a wholesome layer of country-inspired texture. Designer Charlotte Daneel is adept at playing with scale and proportion, as indicated here in the open courtyard. Perfectly appointed rattan chairs afford inspiring views.

Open Plan

This house designed by architect Lisa Rorich displays her signature use of wood, from floors to shelving in the eclectic yet classy kitchen. The outdoors are brought inside not just in the wood finishes, but in strategically placed greenery.

Country Chic

In this Karoo kitchen, the dresser and slipcovered dining chairs are more than slight references to Provençal living. We love the yellow accents that pick up the copper pots and ceramic vases.

Living History

The chic manor house at Vergelegen’s private wing combines all the best of modern luxury with heritage. Subtle colour such as muted greens and pale blues are consistent themes in the heritage home. Celadon green hearth tiles and delicate Spode plates soften the effect of honed-slate countertops. The kitchen, accessed from the dining room, was completely refitted when the space was updated.

Material Gain

In St Leger & Viney founder Gary Searle’s gracious Joburg home, a collection of Linn Ware is displayed in the kitchen, a favourite ‘reject’ vessel in the foreground.

Pared-Back Polish

This country-style kitchen features tongue-in-groove panelling. A checkerboard table cloth in ruby red picks up the red accents in the colourful painting and bone china.

Modern Nostalgia

Okasie’s Dané Erwee and Chris Willemse have created a home in the Winelands that speaks to their loose and indistinctive aesthetic and sense of romance. The scullery, flooded with natural light, stores flower-arranging paraphernalia in the oak cabinets.
