We all need a sanctuary to re-cooperate from the general hustle and bustle of life, especially when living in a fast-paced city like Johannesburg.
Sarah Hooper is an artist, medical doctor and a mother based in Parkhurst, Johannesburg, who gave Condé Nast House & Garden a tour of the sanctuary she lovingly designed for herself and her family.
Sarah shared that her inspiration for her house, garden and paintings, is the idea that one’s own environment is an opportunity for hope and beauty.
‘As a doctor, I experience and witness many painful things that can never be beautiful, and, as much as I want to help, often I can’t. Making a beautiful garden is a way for me to heal and nourish my own environment.’
‘If I show my garden enough care and love, it will grow into something lovely. I love the simplicity and the peace of nurturing a garden. A home is a physical and spiritual haven for a family. I want to show my gratitude for this by giving it my best care and love,’ said Sarah.
