Prominently situated at the northern end of Rissik Street in Braamfontein, is the iconic Johannesburg Metro Centre Council Chambers. The recently refurbished building is an extraordinary vision. It was designed by Joburg-based firm studioMAS Architects and Urban designers in 2017.  The building officially opened in May 2017 and seven months later it bagged an international award for the public services development category at the International Property Awards in London.

The R280-million cylindrical glass enveloped design is in the form of a transparent drum. This is to symbolise the City of Joburg’s transformation that is aligned with principles of transparency, accessibility and accountability. The interior the chamber seats 363 councilors and 172 seats for the public and media in the gallery. This is the first municipal building in South Africa with the Green Star SA Public and Education Buildings (PEB) tool while achieving a Green Star SA Socio-Economic Category rating.
