Clementina van der Walt is one of South Africa’s leading female ceramicists whose art work features prominently in several public collections both nationally and abroad.

Clementina’s work can be found in Iziko Museums, Parliament Collections as well as important university collections that includes UCT’s and UJ’s. Clementina is also a Fellow of Ceramics South Africa and a member of the International Academy of Ceramics.

In addition to the release of her latest ceramic collection, she has also released her own book titled A Ceramic Journey. The book features historical essays, written by art academics, about Clementina’s career and examines the significance of van der Walt’s ceramic creations in a broader cultural context. The book also includes contributions by contemporary gallerists and magazine journalists regarding the current position of artist development in today’s marketplace.

The Clementina van der Walt Ceramic Studio is owned by Clementina and Albie Bailey. The Woodstock based studio, which was established in 1989, produces both functional and decorative pieces.

Regarding her work, Clementina explains, ‘My work focuses primarily on the exploration of the symbolic potential of utilitarian form and the ritualistic understanding of ordinary activities like eating and drinking.’

‘In addition, I make decorative vases and wall tiles where the clay background forms a canvas on which I paint intuitive shapes and images inspired by European modernist painters like Miro, Malevich and Kandinsky. The light, the colours, textures and shapes within the African cultural and physical landscape are reflected in the ceramics.’
