For House & Garden’s inaugural Innovators competition, we invited South African architecture firms to submit recently completed residential or commercial projects on the continent in which glass has been used with particular ingenuity in its design and technical application. Of the dozens of entries received, the 10 that were selected each demonstrate the versatility of glass and its extraordinary possibilities in contemporary architecture.

Sharing a vision for promoting excellence in design, and specifically architecture, PG SmartGlass partnered with H&G to recognise the achievements of these industry innovators.

‘Glass is an extraordinary material,’ says Mark Hamilton-Payne, Marketing & Strategy Director for PG Building Glass. ‘Transparent and ethereal, it offers contemporary architecture a set of design tools that is only limited by the imagination of the architect.

‘Developments in the structural strength and functional energy management performance of this remarkable material are superbly enhanced by the endless possibilities of colour, form and design. Its ability to create privacy or open buildings to allow people to connect with their surroundings enhances the human connection with their environment in a hugely rewarding way. Glass has a unique characteristic to combine colour and form with light allowing it to come alive, responding to the changing seasons and fluctuating light conditions.’

Mark adds, ‘With linear or beautiful curved lines, glass can be sculpted to allow the most creative architect the ability to express his or her unique interpretation of modern design.’.
