Glass is the unifying element between a residence and its striking extension, a conservatory for entertaining that offers a fresh take on the traditional concept. The owner wanted to take full advantage of the attractive garden setting and of the changing seasons within a modern garden pavilion that would embrace the idea of indoor-outdoor living.

The glass box can open up in summer and in winter be closed, with a wood-burning fireplace to keep it cosy. The design is a revisitation of modern glass and steel techniques in a classic typology. The structure is made up of metal and glass doors that form the four walls of the conservatory. A long narrow glass skylight was created in the centre of the pitch roof to allow natural light to flood in, but also provides a glimpse of the lane of jacarandas that line the property. This makes the most of the wonderful Highveld thunderstorms.

The same language of metal-and-glass screen panels was used at the entrance door of the house, as well as the entrance hall. It is used as a connecting device between the different blocks and celebrates the transparency of glass.
