The Last Glass House, Johannesburg ? influenced by the city’s rich industrial and mining history

The influence of Johannesburg’s rich industrial and mining history is clearly seen in this unusual dwelling, in which mass-manufactured steel fenestration is a key characteristic.

The project was conceptualised as a series of interrelated spaces that strongly connect to the surroundings. The north- and south-facing sides were exposed with the use of large glass façades, separated from the steel building frame, which results in a continuous, 45-metre-long glass façade on both elevations. This creates a sense of blurring the transition between indoors and out, allowing the indigenous garden and natural pool to be part of the interior. Patterns and blocks of colour applied to the exterior by the artist owner add a playful, contrasting element.
