Over the past few years’ the designer shipping container home and work spaces phenomenon has taken the architectural world by storm. Whether the recycled shipping containers are used solely as affordable, alternative living spaces or just integrated for contemporary design purposes, the outcome is usually sleek, elegant and luxuriously beautiful.
The architectural trend is yet to pick up in South Africa, but the housing concept has potential to become a viable and affordable housing solution. Thus far there have been local designers and architects who have created incredible and innovative shipping container structures.
Sergio Nunes Design Architects constructed the Gallery on Leviseur contemporary art gallery in Bloemfontein and Nico van der Meulen Architects magnificent Kloof Road house located in Bedfordview, Johannesburg. Shipping containers were used as an integral part of the homes modern design. The house boasts majestic views, layers, and seamless straight lines.
