Say hello to Dr. Esther Mahlangu

What a time to be alive. South Africa, with its ups and downs, smiles and frowns boasts some world-class talent that sure makes us makes us proud. Raw and authentic talent. That’s what springs to mind when thinking of this world-renowned artist.

Ndebele artist, a national icon, and custodian of heritage, Gogo Esther Mahlangu, is now officially Dr. Esther Mahlangu – thank you very much. The University of Johannesburg conferred 81-year-old Mahlangu with an honorary doctorate for being a cultural entrepreneur (nationally and globally) and for her role as a cultural educator on, 9 April 2018.  Mahlangu said she was humbled to be honoured and considers it such a blessing to be recognised at home.We love it when South Africa honours and appreciates our legends while they are still alive.

Why does Esther look so gangSTAR in this picture? 😍😍😍. As my grandmother used to say, the race is not for the swiftest but those who can endure till the end! . . Congratulations DOCTOR! Well deserved as you continue to inspire others with your work and the fruits of your labor, including myself! . . [Renowned Ndebele artist and international icon Esther Mahlangu was on Monday hailed as a visionary individual who "broke down barriers in her own way" during a graduation ceremony held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) . . More than 10 000 hours of deliberate practice? Absolutely. She has been painting since she was 10 years old. Representing South African tribal art long before it became the trend du jour? Oh yes. She rose to international acclaim in 1989 for being included in the Magiciens de la terre at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It was no ordinary exhibition. Look it up.

Her career has soared since then, seeing her collaborate with international brands such as BMW and working with US singer John Legend. Just last year, 12 September 2017 to be exact, Dr. Mahlangu was honoured with a mural at the Citi bike station in Tribeca Manhattan, New York. It was created by New York artist and educator, Imani Shanklin Roberts. Congratulations Dr. Esther Mahlangu, much deserved. We are inspired and proud.
