5 low-maintenance plants

If you can’t keep anything alive but still love the warmth and aesthetic vibe plants and flowers add in your space, faux flowers and plants are on trend right now. They are no longer the pariahs of décor and are very low-maintenance too. However, most people still prefer living, breathing fresh plants in their homes and office spaces. And, with #waterwise trending, (especially in Cape Town) we’ve rounded up five plants that you can get away with watering once in a while.

Not only do they look really pretty indoors but these must-have beauties are super low-maintenance plants. They require very little water and flourish in bright and indirect light.

Snake Plants

Also known as the ‘Mother-in-law-tongue’, it has many benefits besides not being a thirsty plant. One of the most notable benefits is that it’s an air-purifying plant that converts carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Air Plants

The one plant that cannot be killed. It does not even need soil to survive. All you have to do is soak it in water for 2 – 3 hours every fortnight, and let it literally hang mid-air and bloom or in a cute stylish vase.

Great for indoors and the office, bamboo requires little effort on your part, transforms the feel and look of any room instantly and does not need much sunlight either. All you have to do is immerse them in water once a week.

We all, well most of us have an orchid story to tell. But, the trick is to simply not faff too much over these beauties, soak them once every two weeks and keep them away from direct sunlight. Another tip is to add an ice-cube once a week for your orchid to prosper.
