It’s very seldom to get hotels that get it all right. I have been to a few favourite hotels but, even they need some tweaking here and there. That is why I was greatly impressed when I visited Stellenbosch’s Majeka Hotel and Spa. Words like beautiful, magnificent or amazing are all understatements in describing the hotel. It’s definitely a place that is worth your time and money to visit.
Majeka won the 2012/13 Best Hotel Interior South Africa award at the International Hotel Awards, and that was a deserved win. From the driveway, reception, dining room, lounge, the rooms to the cutlery, interior designer Etienne Hanekom did a spectacular job. It’s a French style hotel and that pulls through in all its elements. The showers have wooden flooring, which was a favourite of mine, as I low key am always afraid of slipping and falling in showers.
My favourite place is the bar/lounge, there’s a blend of French and modern in all elements that marry so well. The one thing I would critic is that there be more local books in the lounge bookshelf.
So you know how sometimes a hotel can be beautiful and yet isn’t as comfortable? For example, uncomfortable pillows, an aircon that doesn’t work properly, a TV that has such boring channels or a hotel lounge that’s just dead? You don’t get any of that at Majeka House, you get the sense that from interior to functionality, the owners themselves tried all these out before letting people experience them. A simple example is how bedroom has a door between its lounge and the bedroom. This I feel is for when you have someone in the lounge while the other perhaps want to sleep. The door allows neither to be disturbed. And if you want to still have it open and chat, one from the bed and the other in the lounge, that is possible.
This was the thing that made me fall in love with Majeka, it’s diverse clientele. Stellenbosch over the years has been known to be a place that isn’t racially progressed. Yes, this is changing, but to actually see a place with the equal number of black and white guests, was the stamp for me. Everyone is welcome and is treated so well, I literally wanted to stay for a long while at Majeka.
Dining for the gawd
If you love fine dining, this is your place. A five-course dining experience awaits you. Everything from beef, chicken, Guinea Fowl, pork, ice cream with banana is on that menu. Not only is great food but it is super fresh. And if you are like me who loves food, you can also have a burger by the bar.
The breakfast I had at Majeka has to be the best I have ever had. My favourite Salmon with poached eggs and Champagne was on the menu, so I was in heaven. They even had oats with some Whiskey in it, what more can a guy want.
There are a couple of boutique hotels you definitely need to visit at least once, in your life, Majeka House is in the top three.
