The Sasol logo provided the departure point for the conceptual design of Sasol‘s corporate HQ, a gleaming S-shaped glass box on a nine-metre-high podium, built on the curving edge of Katherine Street in Sandton. The new corporate office brings together all 6000 staff members from its 11 satellite offices into one office space. ‘Hovering’ above an indigenous parkland, the site is classified as a green building – a building designed to reduce the negative environmental impact of the built environment and its occupants – proving to not only be striking by design, but also a key player in the move towards sustainability.
The motivation for green buildings lies in their ability to combat key environmental problems: from unsustainable energy consumption and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions to the pollution of air and water, and poor waste management. The World Green Building Council (WGBC), together with various national green building councils, including the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), promotes and informs the green building movement.
In line with Sasol’s sustainability strategy, Sasol Place has achieved a 5-Star GSSA Design rating. Conspired by leading Jo-burg-based innovators Paragon Architects, the building is one of the largest single-tenanted buildings in Africa. The 67 000m2 commercial space includes a wide array of green building features and initiatives.
A central core of circulation and services ties the expansive space together, with the various areas linked by a series of bridges. The glass façades were carefully engineered to ensure the design satisfied performance as well as aesthetic requirements. The glazing is a combination of reflective glass spandrels and vision glass, which form a unified crystal exterior. It is nothing short of pioneering – and among 10 of our favourite groundbreaking local architecture feats.
