Childhood memories inform a renovation that achieves the balance between past and present.

Architect Gil Schafer’s home sits on the edge of Blue Hill Bay in Maine.

The early-nineties, chalet-style house had “issues”. But he finally solved her greatest conundrum – using interior decoration as much as architecture.

He balances history with modern elements. And throughout the house you will find smatterings of vintage mid-century modern furniture, mostly Scandinavian.

Here’s how to incorporate Gil’s statement pieces into your bedroom.

Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Son ‘Wishbone’ Chair, R22 195.80, Bulthaup

Linen in petrol, Por, St Leger & Viney

Barry Goralnick for Visual Comfort ‘Selene’ table lamp, R14 544, Glo Lighting & Living

Cecil Skotnes Heads Carved, incised and painted wood artwork, POR, Ebony/Curated

Indian iron ‘matka’ pot, R595, Weylandts

‘Ashanti’ stool, R2 995, Weylandts

Ceramic still in sand, R2 200, Cecile & Boyd

Assorted throws, from R2 999 each, La Grange Interiors
