A new addition to the bar scene in Melville (always an excellent barometer of what’s bubbling under the social scene), Mootee is bringing mixology home with African influenced concoctions (both culinary and cocktail) inspired by healing rituals and local ingredients. A concise cocktail menu with tasting notes rather than ingredients is your first clue that they’re doing something fresh, and the ‘lab’ at the back of the restaurant where flavours are distilled and experimented with confirms it.
The perennially popular Perron in Illovo has expanded to Melville. As authentic a Mexican culinary experience as you will find in Jo’burg, the new outlet is on Meliville’s famous 4th Avenue and spills out socially onto the street corner courtesy of a convivial inside-out design. With the same Latin-inspired menu as it’s predecessor, it’s sure to become just as much of a local gem.
While the gastro bar and fine dining scene in Johannesburg is definitely gaining momentum, there are still only a handful of venues who can claim to be doing really exciting things. One such place is Urbanologi inside the Mad Giant Brewery at 1 Fox Precinct. Describing the cuisine as ‘urban garde’, chef Jack Coetzee grew up on a farm and has a passion for local ingredients as well as Asian influences, the result of which is vibrant dishes that fuse street-food trends and down-to-earth flavours, all designed to complement the beers made on site.
Recently taking over the Sandton Sports Bar venue, Milk Bar has opened their third branch in Parkmore (the other two are in Kramerville and on the Keys Art Mile). An eclectic African-themed space with a menu to match, it’s one of the few places in Jo’burg with an outdoor setting- perfect for weekend family outings.
A new addition to the French bistro A la Bouffe next door, just off the 4th Avenue picturesque bars in Jo’burg. Pale pink walls, navy wooden panelling and lots of plants set the scene for an impressive gin menu (both local and international) and the prettiest cocktails you can imagine- think unusual flavour combinations and edible flowers. Husband and wife team Dennis and Caitlyn Human are very hands-on and the epitome of hospitality Definitely book before going: it’s small, new and popular, so a reservation is key.
