Warm browns, bold citrus tones and wooden finishes are the hallmarks of the recently opened Egghead Diner, which is intimate but packs a mighty punch. If you happen to find yourself on Kloof Street over the weekend, chances are you’ve seen this diner. A smaller space with a loyal following, most weekends you’ll see the restaurant is packed, with a small line eagerly waiting out front. The bustling spot serves breakfast all day, a variety of cocktails and when the sun sets, Egghead shifts to the perfect after work drinks location.

As mentioned the popular space has garnered the right kind of attention and was nominated for the Small Space category in 2022 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. A major feat considering the eatery opened a little over a year ago. Small in space but it’s easy to spend hours just catching up with friends over breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The interior is bold and makes a statement, and is a product of a collaboration between the owners and KT Interior, a Cape Town-based design studio headed up by creative director Kobus Truter. Originally based in London, KT Interior moved back to South Africa, and is also responsible for spaces like Cape Town’s Cabo Beach Club and La Parada in Johannesburg’s Rosebank.

The establishment is a mix of retro design, functionality and consideration for the smaller space, as Truter shares that he worked as a chef for over a decade and a designer for 10 years.

The diner has grown their menu since launch and offers breakfast dishes that fill that ideal craving. Think expertly baked brioche buns, sriracha sauce and eggs fried to runny perfection. You didn’t hear it from us, but the Potatohead and Egghead dishes are both great for recovering from a hangover. Comfort food during the colder months or after night out? There’s nothing quite like it. Best of all, you

And as mentioned before, the restaurant also caters for the after-work drinks and dinner crowd. The night menu, available from 4pm, has expanded to include appetizers, and patrons can tuck into tasty polenta fries, creamy mac ‘n cheese or sample a Philly cheese steak. The drinks offerings include beers, bubbly and cocktails. Pick your poison of the night, from fruity Palomas to zesty Mai Tai Tikis amongst many other options.

Book your spot, visit the website to check out the menu or follow them on Instagram for more information.
