Founded in 2015, Global Recycling Day is an annual event that highlights the importance of the efficient recycling systems around the world as well how recycling forms part of the circular economy. While most of us are familiar with the terms: reduce, reuse and recycle - our homes and offices are some of the places we spend the most time and, subsequently make the most waste.

We’ve rounded up some easy tips to try no matter what time of the year it is.

Start a Composting Bin

Whether you’re at home or work in an office, composting organic waste is a great way to reduce the amount of garbage you throw away. While some offices might not want to have a composting section, a great compromise is implementing more waste bins in and around the premises. At home, it’s an excellent option for any gardening enthusiast, as it creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

Make homemade cleaning products or opt for recyclable products

Whenever possible, opt for products that are made from recyclable materials, or can be recycled themselves. While making homemade cleaning products are not for everyone, it’s one way to cut costs and reduce waste in your home.

Repurpose Items

It’s important to think about the lifespan of any item you bring into your home. Before throwing something away, consider if it can be used for a different purpose. Old jars, for example, can be used for storage. Other items might not be possible to repurpose, like electronic items or products that might leech chemicals.

Find out about recycling hubs in your area

One thing you can do, is find out where your local recycling warehouse is and what they accept. Be aware of what can and cannot be recycled, and encourage others in your home or office to recycle as well.
