Julia Buchanan Is Shaping Cape Town's Contemporary Art Scene

Art advisor Julia Buchanan is redefining how contemporary African art is experienced through thoughtful curation

Behind every memorable exhibition is someone who knows how to tell a story. For Julia Buchanan, that story is rooted in contemporary African art, cultural exchange and creating meaningful connections between artists, collectors and audiences.

The Cape Town-based art advisor and cultural strategist has built a career at the intersection of creative practice and business strategy, becoming one of the country's leading voices on contemporary African art. Her latest project sees her co-curating The Foreign Familiar alongside internationally acclaimed designer Thebe Magugu at MAGUGU HOUSE CAPE TOWN, a cultural hub launched this year in collaboration with Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town. The exhibition is only the latest chapter in Buchanan's growing influence on Africa's cultural landscape.

Creating Conversations Through Art

Earlier this year, Mount Nelson expanded its creative offering by partnering with Thebe Magugu to launch the THEBE MAGUGU SUITE and MAGUGU HOUSE CAPE TOWN. Conceived as a concept store, gallery and platform for fashion, art and creative exchange, the space reflects a shared vision of bringing contemporary African creativity into everyday conversation. Buchanan was instrumental in shaping that vision.

Working alongside Magugu, she co-curates the gallery's quarterly exhibition programme, ensuring each show explores ideas that resonate beyond aesthetics alone. Earlier this month, MAGUGU HOUSE unveiled its second exhibition, The Foreign Familiar, following the inaugural By Our Own Hands, which explored making as a form of authorship, healing and resistance.

Reframing Colonial Histories

In The Foreign Familiar, Buchanan and Magugu examine the afterlives of colonial objects and their place within contemporary African life. Rather than treating inherited artefacts as relics of the past, the exhibition considers how they have been transformed through ritual, symbolism and everyday use across Southern Africa.

Fashion, sculpture and fine art combine to create a layered narrative that questions ideas of ownership, identity and cultural memory. Works by Mary Sibande and Wim Botha sit alongside Magugu's own creative practice, while his Mafeteng capsule collection draws inspiration from the Basotho blanket and its complex history of colonial exchange and cultural reclamation. The exhibition reflects Buchanan's research-led approach to curation — one that values context as much as visual impact.

A Career Dedicated to African Art

Buchanan's expertise extends well beyond the gallery walls. She is a member of the Harvard University Center for African Studies Art Initiative Group and holds an MA in Cultural Leadership from the Royal Academy of Arts and the Maastricht School of Management, alongside a BA in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art.

Her professional experience includes roles at leading institutions, including Norval Foundation, where she developed a deep understanding of the contemporary African art ecosystem. Today, she advises collectors, corporations and cultural organisations, helping them build thoughtful, sustainable relationships with African art while supporting artists over the long term.

Supporting the Next Generation

In 2023, Buchanan founded Art School Africa, a registered non-profit organisation created to equip emerging art professionals with practical industry knowledge and business skills. The initiative reflects her belief that supporting artists also means strengthening the wider creative economy — from curators and gallery professionals to collectors and entrepreneurs.

By combining academic research with entrepreneurial thinking, Buchanan is helping reshape how contemporary African art is presented, collected and understood both locally and internationally.

A New Chapter for Cape Town's Cultural Landscape

Through projects like MAGUGU HOUSE CAPE TOWN, Julia Buchanan is helping redefine what an art space can be. Rather than separating fashion, design and contemporary art into different disciplines, her curatorial approach encourages dialogue between them, creating exhibitions that feel relevant, accessible and intellectually engaging.

The Foreign Familiar is a powerful example of that philosophy in action. It invites visitors to look beyond the surface of familiar objects and consider the layered histories they carry, while celebrating the ways African communities continue to reinterpret and reclaim their own cultural narratives.

As Cape Town continues to establish itself as one of Africa's leading creative capitals, Buchanan's work demonstrates that thoughtful curation can do more than display art — it can spark conversations that continue long after visitors leave the gallery.
