Nairobi’s Architectural Gem
The Habitat Apartments, expected to be complete by mid-2020, is a 24-storey 160-unit mixed-use apartment tower designed and constructed by South Africa’s Paragon Group and Design Source, a multi-disciplinary firm of architects, interior designers, and project managers in Kenya.

Located in the CBD of Nairobi, the high-rise building is expected to be one of the country’s first inhabited skyliners. Paragon Architect’s project mandate plans to combine affluent architecture, spatial design, and material use to create a new sense of apartment living and mixed-use development in the city.
The building’s design has been vertically focused with building elements being placed in emphasised vertical lines in order to lift the viewer’s eye upward, making the structures windows and the building itself appear taller than it actually is.

Other innovative architectural features include aluminium panels that reinforce the three-dimensional power of the building’s form. The sporadic openings in these screens filter views into the building and enhance aesthetics while allowing for adequate natural light and ventilation. This will create a pleasant atmosphere in the building’s public and private spaces.
The development has been designed and will be constructed with minimal impact on the surrounding environment. The Habitat’s ‘brise soleil’ will be formed from local masonry using an arrangement that reduces heat gain within the building by deflecting sunlight.
Overall, the Habitat Apartments have been designed to achieve a private and cosy aesthetic using local materials to maintain Nairobi’s authentic aesthetic within the building.
