Autumn Abundance at Tokara’s Rare Plant Fair 2026

Tokara opens its private farm garden for a rare autumn moment of planting, pause and panoramic beauty

Each April, as the vineyards turn and the air sharpens along the slopes of the Helshoogte Pass, Tokara Wine and Olive Estate opens its gates for one of the Cape Winelands’ most anticipated garden gatherings. The Rare Plant Fair & Autumn Open Garden returns on Saturday, 18 April 2026, inviting visitors to wander through its private farm garden at that golden midpoint of the season.

Set against expansive views of the Banghoek Valley, the event has become something of a pilgrimage for plant collectors, landscape lovers and anyone craving a slower, more considered day outdoors. Entry is R60 per person (children under 10 enter free), with tickets available at the gate on the day — a refreshingly uncomplicated invitation to step into nature.

Designed for Gradual Discovery

What distinguishes Tokara’s open garden is its sense of choreography. Meandering pathways lead visitors past thoughtfully placed sculptures and into secluded garden rooms that reveal fresh perspectives of the surrounding mountains and vines. The layout encourages a gentle pace — to pause on a bench, trace the texture of autumn foliage, or simply stand still and take in the shifting light.

Rather than spectacle, the emphasis is on atmosphere. The Rare Plant Fair is an opportunity to “move slowly” through the landscape, allowing the garden to unfold in layers. It is as much about breathing space as it is about botanical rarity.

Specialist growers present rare proteas and exotic finds suited to autumn planting in the Cape

A Treasure Trove for Plant Lovers

Alongside the open garden, specialist growers will offer a curated selection of plants for sale — from indigenous fynbos and sculptural proteas to unusual and exotic specimens suited to autumn planting in South African conditions. For seasoned gardeners, it is a chance to source something distinctive. For novices, it’s an accessible entry point into more adventurous planting.

Autumn, after all, is one of the Cape’s most rewarding planting seasons. The soil retains warmth, rainfall begins to return, and roots establish before the intensity of summer. The fair taps into that quiet optimism — the promise of what will bloom next.

The Quiet Poetry of the Adamastor Moss Garden

A focal point within the wider landscape is the Adamastor Moss Garden, created by international Japanese garden specialist Gert van Tonder. Crafted using local sandstone and granite, and moss gathered from the surrounding terrain, the garden offers a study in restraint and stillness.

From fynbos to moss gardens, the annual fair blends horticulture, art and Winelands ease in April sunshine

Characterised by plush, muted tones and a contemplative mood, it forms a striking counterpoint to the openness of the valley beyond. Guided tours will be offered on an ad hoc, first-come, first-served basis, and visitors will also be able to view the progress of the garden pavilion currently taking shape on site — an evolving architectural layer within an already meditative setting.

Linger a Little Longer

The invitation extends beyond the pathways. A limited number of pre-booked picnic hampers by the Tokara Delicatessen (R650 for two, including a bottle of Tokara Rosé or Sauvignon Blanc; children’s picnic boxes R150) will be available for collection at the Boathouse on the main lawn. Private picnics are not permitted, but the estate’s Restaurant, Tasting Lounge and Delicatessen will operate as usual, making it easy to turn a morning stroll into a leisurely afternoon.

The Adamastor Moss Garden offers a hushed, contemplative pause within the wider Banghoek landscape

Importantly, proceeds from entry support Camphill Farm Community, which has provided residential care and meaningful work opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities since 1978 — adding a layer of purpose to the day’s pleasures.

In a region known for its abundance, Tokara’s Rare Plant Fair stands out for its restraint. It is not about excess, but about attention — to plants, to landscape, to craft, and to the simple act of walking slowly through a garden in autumn light.
