‘When we walked into the marquee this morning, this guy was waiting for us,’ says lead designer and plantsman Leon Kluge, grinning as he hoists yet another coveted RHS Chelsea Gold Medal into the air for South Africa.

But this year, the triumph is even sweeter. Alongside an astonishing 40th Gold Medal, the South African team- led by Leon Kluge and Tristan Woudberg, has also claimed the coveted Best Exhibit in the Great Pavilion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026.

Their 2026 display, themed Life After Fire, is a celebration of the Cape’s fynbos landscape and its extraordinary cycle of destruction, renewal and rebirth- a fire-driven ecosystem that erupts into biodiversity after flames sweep through it.

The mood on the South African stand is electric. After an intense build and days of mounting anticipation, the win feels deeply emotional for the team behind one of this year’s most talked-about exhibits.

‘It’s a very special moment for all of us,’ Kluge says. ‘It’s been a hard build, but the reward speaks for itself. This one is for South Africa - and all our flowers.’

On opening day in London, the win marks yet another triumphant chapter for South Africa at Chelsea, where the country’s wildly expressive planting, extraordinary botanical richness and singular sense of place continue to captivate judges and crowds.
