Brilliant Bedrooms

Nine fresh ways to get the most out of your bedroom

By Kelly Adami | August 18, 2016 | Category interiors/bathroom

From punchy patterns to layered levels, these bedroom ideas will fulfil your decor dreams.

1. Pattern Continuity

The key to mixing patterns is to keep them in the same colourway. Choose one colour from the mix to upholster a large piece of furniture in a plain to bring the look together.

Where to get it

Moorgas & Sons and Nefertiti do custom-made headboards – add a personal touch to your bedroom by asking them to design one for you in your favourite fabric.

2. Clever Storage

Interior Design: Douglas Design Studio

Organise your shoes in a sliding shelving unit that neatly stacks and conceals your collection, while also eliminating the need for bulky hinged doors. This all-in-one unit also incorporates a bedside table and bookshelves, for extra space-saving storage.

For custom cabinetry designed to fit your space, contact joinery experts, Make, and be sure to use high-quality hardware from Blum, available through Eclipse.

3. Scale it Up

Give a small bedroom an unexpected sense of scale by filling it with a four-poster bed against a dark backdrop – use slim modern design to ensure that it doesn’t overwhelm the room.

Where to get it

The Spati four-poster ‘Queen’ bed from Weylandts is a similar option, available in oak or white. For a custom-made option go to Moorgas & Sons.

4. Bedroom Office

Create zones in your bedroom by using a dividing wall to accommodate a home office. The wall provides a higher level of privacy, hiding office clutter and creating a backdrop for the bed.

Wall decals are an easy and effective way to bring life to a bare wall. For a range of decorative wall murals, go to Robin Sprong.

5. Mezzanine Level

Create different zones without putting up walls by using space vertically. Here, an elevated level houses the bed and bedside tables and simultaneously operates as a chest of drawers.

6. Upholstered Bed

Introduce pattern and add additional softness to your bedroom with an upholstered bed.

French-furniture specialists Nefertiti or Block & Chisel have a range of upholstered bed options.

7. Single Four-Posters

Single beds need not be drab – use a polished-aluminium four-poster frame for instant appeal.

8. Fold-Away Bed

This bedroom can be concealed in an instant by simply folding up the bed and closing the cupboard doors to create an open-plan living room – the perfect solution for a studio apartment. Include a built-in bedside table and bookshelf for maximum convenience.

Both Murphy and SA Wallbeds specialise in fold-away beds.

9. En-Suite Bathroom

Is your bedroom too small to include an en-suite bathroom? Consider separating the toilet from the shower and enclosing each in its own compact cubicle.

Where to get it

Use one-way mirrored glass so that the cubicles are opaque from the outside but transparent from the inside. Contact Glass Benders for advice.
