European Craft Meets Forest Living in Family Retreat

Set against the edge of a forest in Lincoln, Nebraska, this expansive family home by The Heartland Interior Design offers a nuanced take on contemporary living — one that feels both deeply rooted and effortlessly refined. Framed by treetop views and flooded with natural light, the residence bridges European artisanal heritage with the grounded practicality of Midwestern life, resulting in a home that is as functional as it is atmospheric.

From the outset, the intention was clear. “We wanted to create an acquired, lived-in, European-inspired home and avoid having the home feel like brand new construction,” explains founder Tara Miller. This guiding principle is evident in every layer of the design, where arched wooden doors, sculptural niches and reclaimed timber beams introduce a sense of history, while expansive black-framed windows anchor the home firmly in its natural surroundings.

Architecture plays a central role in shaping the experience of the space. Vaulted ceilings and a generous open-plan layout spanning three levels create a sense of volume, yet never overwhelm. Instead, the interiors feel warm and inviting — softened by curved furniture, tactile finishes and a palette that allows light to move gently through each room. “The main areas of the house feel light-hearted, family centered and spacious,” Miller notes.

Materiality is where the home truly comes into its own. A European herringbone wood floor runs through the living spaces, grounding the interiors in warmth, while marble surfaces, plaster finishes and unlacquered brass introduce richness and depth. In the kitchen, a La Cornue oven imported from France anchors the space in tradition, while curved cabinetry and a softly contoured marble backsplash bring a contemporary ease. “We used finishes to evoke that European-lived in feel,” the designer says.

This interplay between old and new is further enhanced by a commitment to organic forms. In both the main kitchen and adjoining kitchenette, subtle curves define cabinetry, furniture and detailing. “We didn’t want anything to feel too rigid. We aimed for organic forms,” Miller explains. The result is a fluid, harmonious interior where every element feels considered yet unforced.

Beyond aesthetics, the home has been carefully designed to support the rhythms of family life. Two kitchens cater to both daily routines and entertaining, while a dedicated home theatre — complete with playful, personal touches — offers a retreat for relaxed evenings. 

Elsewhere, a standout wine grotto reimagines the traditional cellar as an immersive, almost transportive experience. “I said I wanted it to feel like you were sub-grade-underneath a basilica in Italy where the stones arched up overhead,” Miller recalls — a vision brought to life through arched ceilings, textured finishes and ambient lighting.

Private spaces continue this narrative of quiet luxury. The primary bedroom, with its vaulted timber ceiling and forest-framed views, feels both serene and grounded, while the bathroom balances beauty with practicality through cleverly selected materials that mimic marble without the maintenance. Throughout, every detail — from bespoke lighting to curated artworks by local makers — reinforces a sense of authenticity and permanence.

Ultimately, this is a home defined not by trends, but by intention. Through its thoughtful layering of materials, forms and influences, it creates a lived-in elegance that feels both timeless and deeply personal — a sanctuary where craftsmanship, comfort and nature exist in perfect balance.
