Inside a Colourful West Chelsea Apartment by Tannehill Interiors
For a California-based couple and their grown children, this light-filled pied-à-terre is more than a city crash pad, it’s a joyful home-away-from-home where comfort, creativity, and connection come together. “Their link to New York is more than just a place to stay,” says interior designer Samantha Tannehill, founder of Tannehill Interiors. “It’s a hub for their family’s adventures.”
Urban Ease Meets Eclectic Design
Set in one of New York City’s most coveted neighbourhoods, the apartment sits within a sleek, contemporary building. Its interiors tell a story that’s anything but minimalist. Tannehill infused the space with layered texture, warmth, and global references, creating a haven that feels grounded yet full of energy.
Upon entering, soft neutral walls in Dimity by Farrow & Ball shift beautifully with the light. From there, bold colour takes over: a Hale Navy kitchen by Benjamin Moore anchors the open plan, while a bright green dining nook brings playful contrast. Throughout, bouclé chairs, velvet cushions, and linen wallpapers add tactile richness, making every corner feel inviting.
A Palette with Purpose
Inspired by the family’s travels through Africa and their philanthropic work across the continent, the palette weaves together earth tones, jewel hues, and handcrafted details. “We wanted to echo the vibrancy of African crafts, but in a way that still feels refined,” Tannehill explains. A gallery wall displays artworks collected over years of travel, while woven baskets and natural fibers subtly reference their global journeys.
In the guest bedroom, blush pink walls and floral wallpaper exude warmth and whimsy, while the main bedroom pairs Dedar’s Art Deco wallpaper with soothing textures for a more cocooning feel. Even the bathrooms carry personality — from charcoal hued wallpaper to fixtures by McGee & Co.
Designed for Good Vibes
Tannehill’s brief was simple: to create a sanctuary that exudes “good energy.” The design team completed the renovation in just seven months, transforming a developer-grade apartment into a layered, lived-in space that mirrors its owners’ joyful spirit. “Every time they walk through the door, they should feel completely relaxed and uplifted,” Tannehill says. And that’s exactly what this urban escape delivers. tannehillinteriors.com
