Defined by the desire to create an elegant and layered interior that bridges heritage refinement with contemporary living, this Madrid apartment by Maison Numéro 20’s reflects their signature approach to combining decorative richness, bespoke details, and curated craftsmanship within a refined residential setting.

The dining room is anchored by a Maison Numéro 20 rug produced by Ulgador

Founded by Oscar Lucien Ono, the interior architecture and haute decoration studio based in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, approached this Madrid apartment with a design narrative strongly influenced by its locale. ‘We wanted the interiors to reflect the richness of Spanish decorative culture through artisanal craftsmanship, layered textures, and a strong connection to local heritage and Mediterranean elegance,’ says Ono. ‘The classical proportions, ceiling details, and generous volumes allowed for a more decorative approach, while the energy and sophistication of Madrid inspired a warm and expressive atmosphere throughout the home.’

The apartment brings together a curated mix of bespoke Maison Numéro 20 pieces and exceptional European craftsmanship. Botanical wallpapers by de Gournay set a poetic tone throughout, while fabrics from Gastón y Daniela, Rubelli, and Nobilis add texture and softness. ‘De Gournay and Gastón y Daniela were essential to the project because of their expertise in craftsmanship, pattern, and textile richness,’ says Ono. ‘Their wallpapers and fabrics helped reinforce the layered decorative identity of the apartment and contributed to the balance between elegance, comfort, and artisanal detail. Collaborating with Gastón y Daniela also allowed us to anchor the project within a Spanish design sensibility and celebrate the country’s long tradition of textile craftsmanship.’

Ono selected botanical wallpapers to create warmth and vibrancy in each room. Their floral compositions bring softness to the interiors while contributing to the apartment’s refined and immersive atmosphere. The motif of green tones, used across wallpapers, textiles, and decorative details created harmony with the natural light while reinforcing the botanical and artisanal character of the apartment. This coup de maître of texture and colour gives the home its distinct identity, combining floral wallpapers, bespoke fabrics, lacquered finishes, marble, gilded accents, and sculptural lighting pieces to create interiors that feel timeless and layered.

The overall composition was conceived as a tribute to refined European craftsmanship while embracing the artisanal heritage deeply rooted in Spanish interior culture. Particular attention was given to celebrating these artisanal traditions through tactile materials, handcrafted details and a warm decorative language like gold accents, chandeliers, and lamps. ‘Sculptural lighting pieces were used as statement elements to enhance the elegance of the architecture,’ says Ono. ‘Custom Maison Numéro 20 designs, including the geometric console table in the hallway, were paired with carefully selected pieces such as the sculptural Guadarte chair in the third bedroom. Decorative accents from Café des Arts complete the layered and refined atmosphere, creating interiors that feel both timeless and deeply personal.’

A personal touch is what Ono is renowned for. Throughout the project, client-led dialogue unfolded in the discovery of just how knowledgeable the American clients were about Spanish artisanal craftsmanship. ‘We were genuinely impressed by their appreciation and understanding of traditional Spanish savoir-faire and decorative arts,’ adds Ono. Throughout the project, we visited many Spanish and French artisanal workshops and stores which became an inspiring part of the creative journey. These shared discoveries helped strengthen the dialogue between local craftsmanship, European heritage, and the refined atmosphere we wanted to create for the home.’

Bathed in the natural Mediterranean light that flows through the open spaces, casting a warm glow on the eclectic mix of antiques and bespoke furnishings, the apartment achieves a rare balance where decorative grandeur feels entirely effortless. The result is a space that effortlessly fuses modern luxury and local saber-hacer, capturing Ono’s flair for creating interiors that are both daring and harmonious.
