This Alabama family home proves dramatic interiors can still be warm and welcoming
Set on a leafy hillside in Mountain Brook, Alabama, this vibrant family home by River Brook balances drama and comfort in equal measure. Moody hues, contemporary interventions and carefully layered materials create a richly personal home designed around the realities of family life.
For many designers, creating a home that feels bold yet genuinely liveable is one of the industry's great balancing acts. Too much drama can feel theatrical. Too much practicality can dilute personality. In this Mountain Brook, Alabama residence, design and construction firm River Brook has managed to strike that elusive middle ground, delivering a home that feels striking, sophisticated and deeply personal.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Kevin and Leigh Misso, River Brook was entrusted with every aspect of the project, from architecture and interiors to furnishings and construction. The homeowners, a couple raising three daughters, approached the team with a clear vision but remained open to the creative process.
"The homeowners came to us with a clear vision for their home, yet remained open to the entire process — from architectural plans to final furnishings," recalls Leigh Misso. "They trusted us to interpret their style, knowing that even if an idea felt unconventional or quirky, it would still align with their ultimate vision."
The result is a 427-square-metre home that feels distinctly contemporary while remaining rooted in the character of its original mid-century architecture.
A home transformed
Located in one of Mountain Brook's most desirable neighbourhoods, the property occupies a leafy hilltop setting surrounded by mature trees and established homes. While the original structure possessed charming mid-century bones, it no longer met the needs of modern family life.
One of the most significant interventions involved removing the existing roof entirely and adding a substantial second level. The expansion introduced approximately 166 square metres of additional living space, including a family den, laundry room, guest suite and three ensuite bedrooms.
The transformation dramatically increased the home's functionality without compromising its architectural integrity.
Rather than erase the building's history, River Brook chose to celebrate it. Existing features such as bay windows and dentil mouldings were preserved and reinterpreted alongside more contemporary elements including patterned flooring, kerfed cabinetry, asymmetrical detailing and sculptural lighting.
"The home's exterior strikes a balance between classic architecture and sleek modern lines," says Misso. "The crisp white stucco, dark window trim and clean roofline create a timeless yet fresh façade."
The art of contrast
Throughout the home, opposites coexist beautifully.
Graceful arches soften transitions between rooms, while graphic floor patterns inject energy. Abundant natural light offsets moments of darkness and drama. Soft, comfortable furnishings sit alongside statement-making design pieces.
"The goal was to create a home that felt loud and dramatic, yet warm, inviting and undeniably liveable," explains Misso.
Nowhere is this more apparent than in the colour palette. While the foundation remains relatively neutral, built upon layers of white, black and natural timber, the interiors are enlivened by rich, atmospheric tones.
Deep blue-greens define the dining room, creating an enveloping backdrop for gatherings. Elsewhere, moody greens, earthy browns and black accents introduce depth and contrast. Patterned floors, graphic wallpapers and tactile textiles bring movement and personality.
The effect is cohesive yet never predictable.
"The result is a home that feels cohesive yet full of moments of surprise," says Misso.
Layered living
A strong material palette provides much of the home's visual richness.
Plaster walls sit alongside handmade tile, soapstone, marble and limestone. White oak cabinetry introduces warmth, while leather, linen, silk, velvet and bouclé contribute softness and texture. Unlacquered brass adds subtle patina and character over time.
These materials were selected not simply for their beauty, but for their ability to create layered, lived-in spaces that would evolve with the family.
Art also became an essential design tool.
One of the earliest influences was the homeowner's vintage Roy Lichtenstein poster, which informed the direction of the living room. Elsewhere, contemporary artworks serve as focal points, anchoring spaces and introducing moments of colour and personality.
"In the dining room, Joe Turner's stunning canvas became the anchor for the furnishings," says Misso.
Together, the artworks create a narrative that unfolds from room to room, ensuring every space feels individual while remaining connected to the larger design story.
A lesson in confidence
Interestingly, one of the project's greatest challenges had little to do with construction.
Initially, the homeowner was hesitant about incorporating antique pieces into what she envisioned as a modern, geometric interior. River Brook believed otherwise.
The team carefully introduced selected antiques to provide warmth and grounding against the home's cleaner architectural lines.
Once the first piece was installed, everything changed.
"Once she saw the first antique installed — a piece that instantly grounded the space and added depth — she was all in," says Misso.
From there, the project evolved into a highly collaborative process, with each layer adding greater confidence and personality.
Designed for family life
Despite its polished appearance, this is ultimately a family home designed around everyday living.
The layout accommodates both quiet moments and energetic family gatherings. Multiple lounge areas encourage connection, while practical spaces such as the mudroom, laundry rooms and guest accommodations ensure the home functions as beautifully as it looks.
Outdoors, a resort-style pool, stone hardscaping and alfresco dining area extend the living spaces into the landscape. The backyard serves as an extension of the home's overall design philosophy: refined, welcoming and perfectly tailored to family life.
By embracing contrast, colour and personality while remaining deeply attentive to comfort, the River Brook has created a home that is dramatic without being overwhelming, sophisticated without feeling precious, and contemporary without losing sight of its roots.
