A West Coast Weekend of Wildflowers, Wine and Lagoon-Side Living
There are few places close to Cape Town that have a way of making a weekend feel longer than it is on the West Coast. The landscape changes almost as soon as you leave the city behind: buildings give way to expansive veld, the horizon widens, and the Atlantic makes its presence felt.
Then there is the lagoon.
The coast’s blue backdrop is the natural centrepiece of the region, framed by white dunes, fynbos, and the open landscapes of the West Coast National Park. The park is home to more than 250 bird species, while Kraalbaai provides one of the prettiest places to visit beside the water.
As soon as August and September arrive, the scenery takes on another feature. The annual wildflower season transforms sections of the West Coast National Park into a layer of colour, with the Postberg section opening specifically for flower season.

GET OUT ON THE WATER
The Langebaan Lagoon is best experienced from the water, particularly when the wind drops and the surface becomes calm.
Club Mykonos offers lagoon boat cruises, with options suited to private outings, couples, and groups.
Alternatively, if you're staying at Kraalbaai, the lagoon becomes part of your accommodation.
For something more active, the region is well suited to kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and other water sports. And if you're happier on land, simply walking the shoreline at sunset can be just as rewarding.
TAKE YOUR TIME IN THE NATIONAL PARK
It is tempting to think of the West Coast National Park as a flower-season destination, but that’s only half the story.
The park's combination of lagoon, dunes, wetlands, fynbos, and coastline makes it worth visiting outside the famous spring scene too. It is also appealing for birdwatchers and anyone interested in the quieter side of nature.
The trick is to leave room for nothing. Bring a book. Pack lunch. Sit beside the water. Let the landscape set the pace.
END THE DAY WITH A SUNDOWNER
If you're staying at Club Mykonos, the resort's waterfront restaurants and bars make it easy to settle in for the evening without getting back in the car.
For houseboat guests, the answer is even simpler: stay where you are. Pour the wine, step outside, and watch the lagoon change colour.
