MEDO: A Mediterranean Retreat Where Design Meets Ritual
In the historic heart of Vico Equense on the Sorrento Peninsula, architect Valentina Autiero has created more than a boutique accommodation experience—she has created a sensory journey through Mediterranean living. MEDO | Dimora Mediterranea is a restored 18th-century palazzo that reinterprets the traditional language of Mediterranean style through a theatrical, deeply personal and emotionally expressive lens.
Set against the vibrant landscapes of southern Italy, the residence celebrates hospitality not simply as a service, but as an act of care. The name itself reflects this philosophy: “MEDO” derives from an ancient Greek term connected to self-care, revealing the project’s deeper purpose — to create a space dedicated to the wellbeing of body, mind and spirit.
The result is a holiday residence where architecture, history and design come together to create an atmosphere of timeless beauty.
A Historic Palazzo Reimagined
The restoration of MEDO | Dimora Mediterranea was guided by a careful respect for the building’s existing character. Valentina Autiero approached the project “on tiptoes”, preserving the original architecture while introducing a new layer of identity shaped by the owners’ personality and vision.
Located within the historic centre of Vico Equense, the residence retains the qualities that define its heritage: vaulted ceilings, thick perimeter walls, original openings and carefully preserved elements passed down through generations.
The property now consists of three large accommodation units, each with an independent entrance, connected through a design language that celebrates tradition while embracing individuality. A central flower-filled courtyard forms the heart of the residence, complete with an old well, lush vegetation and a grand staircase that leads guests into the experience.
Mediterranean Style With A Theatrical Twist
Rather than following a restrained interpretation of Mediterranean design, MEDO embraces abundance. The interiors are expressive, layered and intentionally dramatic, blending baroque influences with contemporary craftsmanship. The palette is rooted in natural tones: soft whites, warm stone shades and delicate earthy hues create a calm backdrop, allowing the architecture and furnishings to take centre stage.
Natural stone flooring with softly rounded edges, vaulted ceilings and reclaimed windows establish a timeless foundation. Against this, bold decorative moments emerge — custom furniture, antique pieces, artworks and handcrafted details that create a sense of discovery throughout the residence. The design reflects the owners’ connection to objects collected and preserved over time, creating interiors that feel personal rather than curated.
Bedrooms Designed As Private Sanctuaries
The bedrooms reinterpret Mediterranean living as a holistic experience. More than sleeping spaces, they become private retreats designed around comfort, beauty and restoration. Large windows flood the rooms with natural light, while custom interiors combine traditional elements with contemporary artistry. Statement headboards featuring colourful relief decorations inspired by nature become sculptural focal points, complemented by family heirlooms, artisan lighting and contemporary artworks.
Period armchairs upholstered in rich fabrics create intimate lounge areas, encouraging guests to experience the bedroom as a place for lingering, reading and relaxation. Every element contributes to the idea of slow living — a celebration of time reclaimed.
The Bathroom As A Piece Of Art
One of MEDO’s most striking design moments is found in the bathrooms, where practical spaces become immersive environments.
Darkly theatrical yet deeply connected to nature, the bathroom design incorporates artisan hexagonal tiles inspired by the colours and reflections of the surrounding landscape. Shades of green and blue are layered with silver and gold accents, creating a shimmering effect reminiscent of sunlight filtering through Mediterranean vegetation.
The handmade tilework extends across walls, ceilings and shower areas, transforming the room into an almost dreamlike installation. A restored original window with transparent cathedral glass frames views of the lush exterior, creating a dialogue between inside and outside.
The freestanding bathtub becomes another sculptural feature — a piece of scenery within the room. Surrounded by fabric tassels and soft transparency, it creates a private ritual space dedicated to relaxation.
A New Language Of Hospitality
MEDO | Dimora Mediterranea represents a new interpretation of Mediterranean hospitality: one rooted in authenticity, emotion and connection. It is not simply a place to stay, but a carefully composed environment where architecture encourages guests to slow down and reconnect with themselves.
Through heritage restoration, expressive interiors and a deep respect for craftsmanship, Valentina Autiero has created a residence that celebrates the true essence of Mediterranean living — the pleasure of beauty, the importance of care and the luxury of time.
