Shonda Rhimes Picks Up NYC Park Avenue Penthouse for R168 Million

If Shonda Rhimes's negotiating skills weren't keen enough when she landed a $300 million deal at Netflix, the Grey's Anatomy and Scandal creator just snapped up a Park Avenue penthouse in New York City for $3 million less than its original asking price. At $11.75 million, the two-bedroom apartment is located in a Rosario Candela-designed co-op building and features all the trappings of a luxury home fit for media royalty: an elevator that opens up directly onto the main entrance hall and foyer; a massive corner living room with walls of windows along two sides; a wood-burning fireplace; a nearby formal dining room with its own fireplace (the previous owner converted the space into a library); an eat-in chef’s kitchen with custom cabinetry, pantry, and wet bar; and an office ideal for Rhimes's undoubtedly busy schedule of meetings and business calls.
Both the master bedroom and the guest bedroom are en-suite, with custom-fitted closets (the master suite features a larger walk-in closet) and plenty of natural light throughout. Perhaps one of the most enviable features of the penthouse, however, is the wraparound terrace, which provides gorgeous city views and a tucked-away privacy nook. Rhimes’s recent purchase may suggest she’ll be spending more time out on the East Coast; this past October, she listed one of her four Hancock Park mansions for a cool $9,995,000. Fun fact: Rhimes originally purchased the 8,298-square-foot home from musician Beck for $5.6 million back in spring 2010.
