Chicken or Beef? We?ll help you decide with our well-researched list of delicious spots to grab a burger on Bree Street, Cape Town

The team at Condé Nast scoured Bree Street, just one of the Mother City’s most popular foodie golden miles, to find the perfect burger served at the perfect venue and with an awesome vibe.

The team chose to review the culinary offerings at the renowned Burger & Lobster

, the chic Roast & Co

as well as the on-trend Bree Street foodie destination, Clarkes

.

After weeks of juicy, meaty, gluttonous and slightly tipsy taste tests, this is what we have concluded.

Burger & Lobster

Owned by three restauranteurs, Nico, Paulo and Anthony from Greece, Italy and South Africa in that order, Burger & Lobster is Cape Town’s exclusive and premium surf and turf eatery. The trio, who also run restaurants in the V&A Waterfront, opened B&L 2 years ago.

The inspiration came after a trip to New York where one of the partners visited Burger & Lobster USA and wanted to create a unique version of South African surf and turf in. According to B&L legend, what makes the eatery unique is their combination of homemade brioche buns, the use of our iconic South African crayfish and the fact that they make their own beef patty composition from three different unique prime cuts of beef.

So, we went and tried their renowned Wolf Burger, the Southern Fried Chicken Burger and trademark Burger & Lobster Burger. Each cocktail has been created to pair with a burger, lobster or lobster roll on the menu.

The bar team have put creatively exquisite twists on the simplest cocktails such as the Old Fashioned. Traditionally made with brown sugar, angostura bitters and Woodford reserve, The B&L team fat wash their Woodford reserve with bacon and add maple syrup sourced from Canada. For extra dramatic effect, they smoke the glass with cherry oak wood.

Roast & Co.

Sister restaurant to the popular Bree Street venue, Headquarters (HQ), Roast & Co. brings fine dining to the classic roast chicken and comfort food.

The interior of the restaurant exudes a golden glow bringing a moody bar and lounge experience to the venue which is decorated with contemporary furnishings and glamorous fittings. HQ’s were inspired to create a wholesome chicken dining experience for the public and change the stereotypical belief that they can only indulge in something as traditionally comforting at a Sunday lunch or at home.

Clarke’s

For the past 8 years, Clarke’s has garnered a reputation for delivering wholesome, American-style fare that satisfies the palates of hip Cape Town locals and discerning internationals alike. The trendy interior is a mash-up of hipster minimalism with a hint of the 1950s diner aesthetic. But let’s get down to the nitty gritty - the burger.

The Clarke’s beef burger has been raved about since its inception. A lovingly made brioche bun envelops an Oak-Valley grass-fed 210g beef patty, topped with home-made pickles and a slice of Underburger cheese. The simplicity of the burger allows each ingredient to shine and thus makes it, arguably, the best burger on Bree Street.
