Tintswalo Summer House: A Bold New Boutique Hotel in Cape Town’s Glencairn
Perched above False Bay in the quiet seaside village of Glencairn, Tintswalo Summer House arrives as one of the most distinctive boutique hotel openings on the Cape Peninsula this year.
I checked in for a night not entirely sure what to expect. The building had long sat in my periphery. Familiar, but never compelling enough to warrant a stop. That changed the moment the Tintswalo Collection team reintroduced it in its now-signature sherbet pink. Suddenly, it was impossible to ignore.
A maximalist take on heritage
Originally established in 1904 as the Glencairn Southern Right Hotel, the property has been carefully restored, retaining its original bones while embracing a more expressive, contemporary identity. The building shows its age, expect the occasional creak or wind-induced rattle, but this only adds to its character, rather than detracting from the experience.
At the helm of the interiors is Camlyn Johnston, whose debut project signals a confident, colour-forward approach. Pink carries through with intent: from the staff’s crisp uniforms to the poolside mural and into the guest suites themselves.
For those drawn to layered interiors, this is where the hotel finds its rhythm. Pattern, colour and decorative detail are unapologetically embraced. While there are moments that reveal this as a first project, they are unlikely to register with most guests. What does come through clearly is a distinct point of view, and the sense of a designer finding her stride.
Rooms with personality
The hotel comprises just 12 suites, each individually styled and named, from Rosie’s blush tones to the cooler palette of Azure. Some overlook the ocean, others the pool terrace, but all lean into a sense of whimsy and escapism.
This is not a pared-back, minimalist stay. Instead, it invites you into a more expressive, almost nostalgic world, one that feels deliberately removed from the everyday.
Dining with a coastal lens
At the on-site Summer House Eatery, the offering is Mediterranean in spirit, interpreted through a distinctly local lens by head chef Thando Jaxa.
The space itself mirrors the hotel’s layered aesthetic — sea views on one side, a wall of antique plates on the other — while the menu leans into open-fire cooking, fresh seafood and seasonal produce. It’s the kind of setting that encourages you to linger, whether over a long lunch or a slow, convivial dinner.
A considered extension of the Tintswalo brand
Guests seeking additional indulgence can access the spa at sister property Tintswalo Boulders via shuttle — a thoughtful touch that extends the experience beyond a single stay.
This opening marks another step for the Tintswalo group, known for its intimate, character-led properties. Here, that philosophy is expressed through a more playful, design-led lens, one that feels both personal and distinctly place-driven.
The verdict
Tintswalo Summer House is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that’s precisely its strength.
For travellers seeking a polished, design-conscious escape with a strong point of view, it delivers. And for those who appreciate interiors that lean into colour, personality and a sense of narrative, it’s a welcome addition to Cape Town’s boutique hotel scene.
