Fern Favourites
Ferns offer height, drama and year-round interest with large foliage in dramatic shades of green
Heidi Bertish is a writer, editor, and landscape photographer whose work draws us deep into the cultivated wild. With over a decade at the helm as Gardens Editor of Condé Nast House & Garden South Africa, she captures the quiet beauty and complexity of landscapes shaped by both hand and heritage. She graduated with a postgraduate degree in Psychology and History of Art from the University of Cape Town before returning to study Landscape Design and horticulture. Heidi began her career among the living archives of Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and went on to work with renowned landscape designer Franchesca Watson. Her lens and words have travelled widely- from the gardens of the Cape to the pages of House & Garden UK, Gardenista and Gardening Australia. She photographed the acclaimed book, ‘The Garden of Babylonstoren’ and was editor for ‘Grootbos Florilegium’, a landmark contemporary tomb of botanical art. Heidi was part of the team representing South Africa at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and has spoken internationally on the distinctiveness of her country’s gardening heritage, flora and design. With a wide range of interests, recent commissions have seen her nuanced voice turn to luxury travel, as well as global style and interior design for Conde Nast House & Garden UK. Her happy pace is on the fynbos-covered mountains at Africa’s southern edge, where she finds rhythm and place to inspire her storytelling.
