Few works in the classical collection hold the cultural weight of Swan Lake. With its captivating score, graceful choreography, and timeless narrative of love and transformation, the ballet has remained one of the most recognisable works in the performing arts. This August, Cape Ballet Africa brings a new staging of the beloved classic to the Teatro, Montecasino, for a limited season in Johannesburg from 7 August 2026.

First composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in the late 19th century, Swan Lake tells the story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess condemned by a sorcerer’s spell to live as a swan by day. Their meeting sparks a fragile hope of redemption, yet deception and dark magic threaten to unravel the promise of freedom. The ballet’s enduring appeal lies not only in its narrative but also in its ability to balance emotional storytelling with moments of breathtaking practical precision.

For this South African premiere, choreography and stage direction come from Elena Glurjidze, the Georgian-born former principal dancer of English National Ballet. Glurjidze brings a particularly personal connection to the work, where her final performance with the company was as Odette/Odile in Derek Deane’s Swan Lake at London Coliseum in 2015.

The production is performed by a 50strong company and features new sets by Michael Mitchell and costumes designed by Marcel Meyer, the creative duo behind Cape Ballet Africa’s staging of The Nutcracker, which was nominated for the Naledi Theatre Awards.

Following the company’s warmly received Johannesburg season last year, the return sights a continued desire for large-scale classical ballet productions on local stages. Performances will run across matinee, afternoon and evening slots throughout the season, with tickets ranging from R220 to R720.

Elegant, gloomy and visually arresting, Swan Lake remains the climax of classical ballet – a work that continues to draw audiences into its orbit more than a century after its debut.
