Inspired by New York City, Mulberry & Prince is giving Capetonians a taste of this buzzing metropolis’s culture with their “lazy Sunday” menu. It features a selection of timeless American dishes, often tucked into when heading out for brunch. The brunch treats are tempting comfort foods that allow patrons to enjoy an out-of-the-box dining experience- since they’re a far cry from what would usually be expected.

Case in point: the buttermilk biscuits bathed in homemade sausage gravy. Another option, which diners with a sweet tooth will find nearly impossible to resist, is the brioche French toast. Crispy bread slices are immersed in nutmeg, topped with a dollop of whipped honey butter and finished with generous spoonfuls of maple syrup.

Those who crave savoury fare will be enticed by the chicken and waffles. Texas hot sauce is trickled over this delicacy, giving it a piquant flavour. A mouth-watering side that could accompany the waffles is cheesy grits, described as the US edition of South African staple, mielie pap. Other side choices are homespun hashbrowns, cooked with the fluffiest potatoes, and candied bacon, a sugary take on a much-loved breakfast favourite.

Speaking of sugar, icing sugar is scattered over the buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes, or any of the menu’s luxurious foods, will be superbly complemented by the vast array of offerings on their drinks menu. It includes a sparkling mimosa, mixed with freshly squeezed naartjie extracts, and a tangy Bloody Mary embellished with a blue cheese-stuffed olive.
