The Middle of Nowhere

Sijnn Wines, in Malgas along the Breede River, is completely isolated — owned by the Trafford family of Stellenbosch fame. The site is characterised by round river stones, likened to the Rhône’s galets, and the tasting room and cellar are built from these — blending into the landscape.

In the Overberg

Sleep in the thick of nature with a farm-cottage stay in Elim. In this small Agulhas town, Strandveld Vineyards offers two restored, self- catering cottages and standout wines. Black Oystercatcher has equally comfortable farm-style units and excellent wines. Enjoy an on-site tasting room and restaurant that serves fresh platters, wood-fired pizzas and seasonal garden dishes alongside other local wines and craft beer.

Black Oystercatcher

Vine Fact

This Agulhas wine route may be the newest, but winemaking began here 150 years ago with Moravian missionaries who farmed vines to make ‘nagmal wyn’ for communion.

Step Back in Time

Where it all started: Delheim in the Greater Simonsberg. High up on the slopes of the mountain, the tasting room is truly enchanting as coloured light dances in through stained glass windows. Look forward to seasonal cheese fondues and mushroom forages, picnics, the Garden Restaurant as well as the mapped garden and forest walks through the farm’s fynbos and yellowwood pockets.

Prestigious Pedigree

A newcomer to Napier, Fortes Family Wines is a boutique, family- run operation with a small range of wines co-crafted by celebrated Elim winemaker Conrad Vlok. On the expansive vineyards, there is self- catering accommodation overlooking the land, with a pool to plunge into. Devoid of light pollution, the stars at night are particularly beautiful. Tastings are by appointment.

Sweet Dreams

For old-world luxury and glamour, stay at the historic Lanzerac Hotel, established in 1692. Home to the first bottled Pinotage (1959), the five-star dame flaunts Cape Dutch gables, oak-shaded courtyards, period lounges, modern comforts and a world-class spa. For a more contemporary stay, Sugarbird Manor (home of Botanica Wines and a protea farm) offers modern guest suites as well as four loft- inspired cottages. Think wide  verandas, a rim-flow pool and Simonsberg views.

Vine Fact

In 1971, the year the route was launched, Simonsig created the first Cap Classique named the Kaapse Vonkel.

A River Runs Through It

Zoetendal Vineyards is situated on the banks of the Nuwejaars River just outside of Elim. It’s a place of transformation: 75% Black-owned, former third-generation farm worker Denzel Swarts is the estate’s sales and brand executive. Beautifully appointed, luxury accommodation is available, as well as an on-site restaurant.

Keep it in the Family

Herding bored children through tastings? Not at Spier. At this historic Cape farm in Stellenbosch, dating back to 1692, children will love the farm’s Elemental Play Garden — featuring tunnels, bridges and splash pools as well as grape-juice tastings, Segway vineyard tours and kids’ craft activities. Adults get the good stuff too: excellent wines, top eateries and a plush new hotel and spa.

Be Moved

An iconic landmark of the Helderberg, Waterford offers both a 4x4 tasting through vineyards and fynbos as well as a guided hike through the farm’s outskirts. Back at the cellar, the experience concludes with a wine and chocolate pairing.
