Many of us still find ourselves confined to home for the time being, since it's difficult to travel much further than the UK without the fear of having to quarantine for 14 days, or anxiety about picking up (or spreading) coronavirus. For many of us, the views from our windows remain just the same as they have been for the last 17 weeks.
While there are many apps that allow us a small window into the lives of others, WindowSwap has literally given us that luxury. All around the world people have been filming the views from their windows, views which may seem boring four months down the line, but to a fresh pair of eyes can provide a refreshing break from the monotony of our own, and a small amount of much-needed escapism.
From my own desk in south London, I have watched a tram rolling down the street in Berlin, the sun streaming across a garden in South Africa, and my current view is of a landscape in Switzerland, where a castle perches atop a hill in the distance. I have even observed the neighbours pruning their front garden in Sao Paulo, Brazil (little did they know).
Though it may not quite provide the same escape that international travel does, it does allow a moment of relaxation, and something new to look at that isn’t the fox who sleeps on the garden shed, or the 159 bus outside the kitchen window, and we should all be grateful for that.
