Cape Grace’s Christmas in July: A Winter Retreat of Design, Flavour and Festive Flair

Whenever I visit the Cape Grace hotel at the V&A Waterfront, I’m always greeted with a warm “Welcome Home.” While I’m not usually one for scripted pleasantries, here it feels authentic. This winter, the newly launched Heirloom restaurant invites guests to experience a Christmas in July Afternoon Tea, and we couldn’t resist popping in.

Although the hotel exudes understated luxury, the sense of home is unmistakable thanks to the attentive staff and welcoming ambiance. At the heart of the offering is a striking festive installation, curated by acclaimed floral and décor studio Okasie. Known for their innovative approach to florals, Okasie has reimagined the holiday season with a fresh, modern edge. Designer Kobus Scheepers describes the result as “elegant, creative, abundant.”

Expect deep jewel tones, rich velvets, sculptural Christmas trees, and winter wreaths. Lush arrangements of Cymbidium orchids, curly willow, preserved citrus, and stocks bring texture and depth, creating a space that feels both celebratory and cocooning.

The Afternoon Tea itself is a sensory delight, accompanied by a live pianist playing a mix of classics and contemporary pieces. The menu blends nostalgic favourites, like mince pies, gingerbread biscuits, and turkey cranberry finger sandwiches, with unexpected delights like chicken samosas, cherry mousse, and caponata tarts. A glass of bubbles completes the experience, with a cranberry-spiced iced tea available for a festive non-alcoholic alternative.

Running until the end of July, Christmas in July at Cape Grace is a beautifully curated winter escape. Booking is essential.
