Winter Warmers: Cosy Tables And Comfort Food In Cape Town
When the weather turns wintery, South Africans have a particular talent for embracing the art of hibernation. Beach days and long hikes make way for fireside gatherings, slower weekends and, perhaps most importantly, meals worth lingering over. Winter is the season for comfort food, generous pours and cosy restaurant tables – and it is also a good time to take advantage of specials that make some of Cape Town's most sought-after dining spots a little more accessible.
Whether you're after steak and a glass of red on Kloof Street, sushi for lunch or a comforting bowl of pasta after a Sea Point sunset, Dineplan has rounded up a selection of winter restaurant specials worth making plans for.
Club Kloof
Sunday Club Steak, Frites & Wine, R295pp, Sundays
Channelling the glamour of 1980s Milan, Club Kloof sets the scene for a particularly appealing Sunday afternoon. Its rich red dining room and intimate atmosphere make it an ideal destination for a date or leisurely meal with friends. The Sunday special includes steak frites and a carafe of red wine, served as the restaurant buzzes around you. For those who believe dessert is an essential part of any winter meal, tiramisu can be added for an extra R100 per person.
Iron Steak And Bar
Winter Steak Special, R265pp, Monday – Sunday
For a winter dinner built around a good steak, Iron Steak and Bar makes a compelling case. The lively neighbourhood restaurant combines the atmosphere of a local hangout with the character of a modern steakhouse, with an open-fire grill at its heart. The winter special includes a 200g flat iron steak served with Wagyu beef-dripping popcorn and a fresh green leaf salad, followed by salted caramel ice cream. It is the sort of uncomplicated, indulgent meal winter seems to demand.
Obi Restaurant
R100 Bento Box Lunch, R100pp, Tuesday – Saturday
For something lighter but no less satisfying, Obi's R100 Bento Box Lunch is a particularly tempting weekday option. The Long Street restaurant, founded by sushi legend Papa San and chef Ben Bettendorf, serves a generous selection for an impressively accessible price. The bento includes miso soup, salmon rose, salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, four prawn California rolls and four vegetable tempura with dip.
Our Local
Winter Dinner Set Menu, R225 two courses / R295 three courses, Thursday – Saturday
For a relaxed winter evening, Our Local offers two locations to choose from, with restaurants on Kloof Street and in Sea Point. The interiors combine abundant plants with vintage furniture, creating an easy-going setting for dinner with friends. The seasonal set menu leans into comfort food, with dishes including baked Camembert, roasted pumpkin, beef ragu and creamy orzo. In Sea Point, pair dinner with a sunset stroll along the promenade before settling in for the evening.
Kraal Restaurant At Joostenberg
Wagenhuis Winter Lunch, R350pp, Friday – Sunday
For those willing to venture beyond the city, winter in the Winelands brings its own particular charm. At Kraal Restaurant at Joostenberg, soft skies and crackling fires provide the backdrop for a three-course set lunch centred on seasonal, farm-to-table cooking. Locally reared lamb and beef feature on the menu, accompanied by a tasting flight of three estate red wines. It is made for long, lazy lunches – although these tables move quickly, so advance booking is essential.
