There's an everlasting magic in a gift that transcends the present, quietly passed from hand to hand, shaping family stories across generations. This is a sentiment that lies at the heart of Patrick Mavros, a family-run brand that has established itself through intricate, handcrafted jewellery and objets d’art inspired by Africa’s natural beauty. Each creation is designed to last, to become a part of a family’s legacy, imbued with memories and tradition.

And for architectural designer Zeanne Duminy of Zeanne and Goss Design Studio, the allure of heirlooms reaches far beyond aesthetics. Especially in a fast-paced world of fleeting trends, she believes heirlooms offer grounding and that items chosen with care become the heart of a home, imbuing its spaces with warmth, depth and a sense of belonging. ‘Heirlooms have the power to ground us,’ she says. ‘They’re not just decorative – they carry stories and emotions that make a space feel uniquely personal and they remind us that, even amidst constant change, some things hold lasting value.’

Reflecting on memories of the rattail spoons she was gifted by her great aunt on every birthday, Zeanne has come to appreciate that such treasures carry a value that only grows with time. ‘It’s about longevity, the enduring quality of things built to last,’ she explains. ‘A well-chosen piece, like the spoons from my aunt, reveals its meaning slowly, becoming more cherished as it weaves into our lives and memories.’

Zeanne’s philosophy of continuity permeates both her design work and personal life. Growing up, her mother’s Swedish heritage infused their home with visible reminders of family legacy in the form of Kosta Boda glassware and delicate Lladró figurines. ‘These pieces weren’t tucked away or reserved for special occasions, they were always visible, woven into the fabric of our daily life,’ she shares. ‘My mother didn’t just display them – she celebrated them. Through her actions, she instilled in us a sense of reverence for these pieces, creating continuity that rooted our home in meaning and memory.’

Further, visibility and accessibility of heirlooms is central to Zeanne’s design philosophy. In a space, she places treasured items, such as Patrick Mavros’s silver creations, where they can not only be admired but also where they can become part of daily life. ‘These pieces should feel alive, woven into the rhythm of a home,’ she notes. ‘On display, they should invite conversation, spark nostalgia and bring joy. It’s a way to honour the craftsmanship behind each piece.’ By keeping these items in sight, she feels that it ensures they remain an active part of her home’s energy and its evolving story.

As Alexander Mavros (of the family behind the brand) says, Patrick Mavros embodies this ideal of legacy and thoughtful selection. ‘An heirloom is like a thread that ties generations together. It’s not just about the object itself, but also the memories and traditions it holds, creating a sense of continuity within a family.’ This sentiment is a driving force behind each Patrick Mavros piece. ‘Our family has always believed that the best gifts hold meaning beyond the moment,’ Alexander explains. ‘Each item we create is a story, a future heirloom, something that will be part of your family’s narrative for years to come.’

As the Patrick Mavros brand has grown over four decades, it has remained deeply rooted in Africa’s natural beauty, celebrating the continent’s wildlife and landscapes through intricate designs. The creations, such as the elegant 'Fari' tree and Guinea Fowl table settings, are reminders of Africa’s splendour and cherished symbols of its artistry.

During the holiday season, a natural time for reflection, Alexander speaks to the lasting impact of these thoughtful gifts, ‘By choosing pieces crafted with card and designed to last, you’re not just creating something beautiful for today — you’re laying the foundation for a legacy that can be shared with future generations,' he says. ‘Each time an intricately designed elephant hair bangle, sculpted candleholder, or pair of Xigera stud earrings is worn or displayed, it becomes a reminder of the giver and a witness to countless family moments.’

'Our pieces are more than just jewellery or objets d'art, they are also symbols of the enduring bonds that tie a family together, primed with stories and emotions that will resonate for years to come,’ Alexander says. This approach to gifting and collecting resonates with Zeanne’s hopes for her family, as she envisions passing down her treasured items to her sons.

‘These pieces will be reminders of family, of craftsmanship, of Africa and of the joy of setting a beautiful table for loved ones.’ In her view, these heirlooms carry an emotional weight in not only their beauty, but also the life and memories embedded within them. Heirlooms affirm the timeless over the transient, a way to celebrate quality and the lasting impact of a thoughtful gift.
