In the remote reaches of northern Zambia, 30 kilometres from Kafue National Park, the Lunga River curls through grasslands and forests to form a lifeline for nature. On its quiet banks, the Lolelunga Private Reserve stands as a 30 000-hectare haven where design and wilderness coexist in rare harmony, and true luxury lies in simplicity.
After an early-morning scramble, involving an expired passport and two flights, we arrived to a chorus of welcome songs from the reserve’s team. From the outside, the main lodge appears familiar — thatch roof, timber beams, gravel drive.
Step inside and a new world unfolds. Fygg Studio, the creative force behind the interiors, has reimagined the classic safari vernacular with quiet restraint. Cool stone floors, biscuit-toned linens, woven ceilings by Tribal Textiles and hand-hewn timber pieces by Lusaka Collective create a tactile language that feels rooted in its setting, contemporary and undeniably serene.
Perfect for couples or small families, each of the seven spacious accommodation suites follow a minimal yet sensuous design cue. Texture, marble, weave, thatch and leather do the storytelling.
The living area — a social heart and sanctuary boasting panoramic views of the river — is where family-style meals happen around an oversized dining table. Private diners can also enjoy a quieter experience, sharing in the views of elephants sometimes wandering through the shallows beyond.
What sets Lolelunga apart is its rhythm of both land and water. Traditional game drives offer close encounters with wildlife. The river safaris unfold at a slower, more meditative pace perfect for birdwatchers and photographers alike. For those with patience and quiet curiosity, the Lunga River’s crystal-clear waters invite catch- and-release fishing — a rare moment of stillness in motion.
The breakfast cruise is another highlight — coffee in hand as the sun lifts over the horizon, the bush awakening to its daily symphony. Mornings begin with hippos grunting in the mist, while afternoons slip into poolside reverie overlooking the river. For the adventurous, a night ensconced in luxury beneath the stars awaits on the Ngoma Deck, where the Milky Way unfurls in cinematic clarity.
Lolelunga’s true luxury lies in its ethos. The reserve restores not just ecosystems but also communities, through conservation, education and sustainable sourcing. Working with some of the hunter-gatherer residents in the area, they launched their rewilding project which seeks to reverse damage and restore a self-sustaining ecosystem in the surrounding landscape.
The spa, stocked with Africology products, also opens onto plains where wildlife can graze freely (its scent and stillness is as restorative as the treatments themselves). Lolelunga Private Reserve can be described as a place where one arrives as a guest, but leaves as a friend — grounded, restored and quietly changed.
