Inspired by the rich and bold flavours of the world’s most precious spice, Spice Route Wines recently launched its maiden rosé, the Saffron Rosé.

As the sun rises above fields of violet-blue flowers, specialised pickers begin the harvesting of the sought-after Saffron spice. One by one, each of the three ochre stigmas is pulled out of the delicate flower and dried by hand – a lengthy process that makes Saffron cost almost as much as gold. Much like this exotic hand-harvested spice, the grape selection for the Spice Route Wines Saffron Rosé is equally as rigorous…

The low-yielding bush vines, which are grown in unique vineyards in Darling and the Piekenierskloof, ensure that only unblemished bunches undergo light pressing, releasing sensual floral and honey-like aromas into this serious rosé.

‘The Saffron Rosé is made in a more complex style that will benefit from some ageing,’ says Spice Route Wines winemaker, Charl du Plessis. The wine comprises 100% Grenache grape variety and is gently sorted and pressed by hand to extract the pink colour. The combination of delicate aromas and bold flavours make it a masterful match when paired with almost any dish. It’s the perfect choice for rich meat dishes as well as lighter and creamier seafood fare.

Stand a chance to win a ‘Wine Pot Luck’, a surprise mixed case from Spice Route Wines, with the Saffron Rosé a definite inclusion. Enter here.

Competition closes 2 June 2017. T’s & C’s apply.

The Spice Route Saffron Rosé retails at R140 a bottle and is currently exclusively available at the Spice Route Tasting Room and Shop located at Spice Route Destination in Paarl. For more information visit spiceroute.co.za.
