Ten years ago photographer Krisjan Rossouw burst onto the art scene with his compelling, contemporary portraiture and representations of modern Africa. Fast-forward a decade, and this entirely self-taught talent has cemented himself as an artist of note – with many projects, collaborations and exhibitions under his belt.

The moody, somewhat otherworldly portraits where the play of light and dark are paramount really capture the viewer, all while using photographic techniques and non-traditional light sources to achieve his desired outcome. Each image is an in-depth process that takes time and experimentation with varied light sources to achieve the desired outcome, “I would like to think that this is much how painters of the classical works approached their subjects. I strive to achieve my own version of this with light instead of paint”, Krisjan says. The result are beautiful photos of men and women in tropical settings. Honouring the naked body, the models wear crowns and coverings of lush greens.

KRX by Krisjan Rossouw opens on Sunday 19 February 2023 and is as much a celebration of his unique lens on the African diaspora, as it is a showcase of this unique artist’s extensive abilities that have captivated collectors around the world. The upcoming show features a capsule retrospective of the artist’s practice over the last decade, along with some un-exhibited works and a preview of his current ongoing 2023 project, Obscura. KRX is a unique opportunity for fans and collectors alike to witness his remarkable ability and evolution since 2010.

KRX at The Gallery at Grande Provence, Franschhoek, is Rossouw’s third solo exhibition at the gallery and is a fitting return to a space that has showcased his work previously.
