For Mexican design brand Dórica, longevity is more than a quality of a well-made object. It is a philosophy that has shaped the brand since its founding in 2016. Under the creative direction of designer Sebastián Ángeles, Dórica is marking its 10th anniversary by looking back at a decade of furniture, craftsmanship and material exploration – while opening a new chapter with its first collection of everyday objects.

The brand’s approach began with a straightforward premise: that a well-made object can endure. Its debut collection, Pentagrama, translated the rhythm of music into repetition, structure and form, establishing a design language in which conceptual ideas are carried through into physical materials. In 2016, Dórica made its first public appearance at Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Arte as part of the Abierto Mexicano de Diseño, before winning first place in the Dimueble competition that same year. The recognition helped finance Pentagrama and set the foundation for the decade that followed.

Dórica’s furniture reflects a decade of Mexican design shaped by craftsmanship, materiality and an enduring sense of form

Since then, Dórica’s collections have explored different interpretations of nature, memory, proportion and function. Boreal draws on ideas of balance, repetition, lightness and calm, while Sensato centres precision and considered craftsmanship. Eréditha examines memory and the role of objects as witnesses to everyday life, and AP brings together years of experimentation through an emphasis on curves, proportions, ergonomics and functionality. Rather than pursuing a single aesthetic, the collections have allowed Dórica’s visual and material language to evolve while retaining a recognisable sense of restraint.

Much of this evolution has happened in the workshop. Production, experimentation and refinement have informed how Dórica’s pieces respond to the body, weight, movement and the passage of time. The result is a design philosophy in which permanence is practised through making: correcting processes, listening to materials and refining details that may not always be visible in the finished piece.

This thinking also informs the brand’s interpretation of luxury. Cabal explores a quieter expression of luxury through proportion, durability and detail, combining genuine leather and solid wood, while Essentials focuses on the objects needed to accompany and support everyday life. Across both collections, beauty is found less in excess than in the relationship between material and function.

Dórica’s world has expanded beyond furniture, too. Its first showroom in Coyoacán and its current Casa Dórica in Mexico City’s Condesa neighbourhood act as physical extensions of the brand’s design language, bringing furniture into conversation with materials, art and architecture. Its growing presence at international fairs, exhibitions and publications has similarly introduced the work to new contexts without compromising its core vision.

Now, in its 10th year, Dórica is shifting scale with Prea, its first collection of everyday objects. The collection moves from the larger pieces that inhabit a home towards the smaller gestures that shape domestic rituals – setting a table, lighting a candle, holding fruit or simply accompanying a familiar moment.

In this sense, Prea is less a departure than a natural continuation of Dórica’s journey. After a decade spent designing furniture for the spaces people inhabit, the brand is turning its attention to the objects used within those spaces. Together, Pentagrama, Boreal, Sensato, Eréditha, AP, Cabal, Essentials and Prea form an evolving collection of ideas, united by an interest in material, craftsmanship and objects that can remain relevant beyond a particular moment or trend.

Founded by Sebastián Ángeles in 2016, Dórica continues to design and manufacture all of its collections in Mexico, working with the natural properties of its materials to create furniture and objects intended for everyday life.
