Avid ceramic lovers, this one is for you. If you live in Cape Town, you may have heard of the Potters Market in Rondebosch. The biannual market is run by Ceramics SA (the Western Cape sector), and hosts a variety of ceramists and their wares. This year, the organisation celebrates 50 years and their next event is just in time for the festive season. You can check out the next market on 26 November at Rondebosch Park.

The biannual event is the perfect family-friendly occasion as the park provides ample space for prams, little ones and even your beloved pooch. And it’s a staple of the community, as the Western Cape region of Ceramics SA has been hosting this market for over 45 years.

It’s a great way to meet makers from across the Western Cape, and get to see their wares in person. Have a browse and check out various homeware items, designs and decor styles. Especially, if you’ve been wanting to start on this clay hobby as well. While online shopping is still a favourite with many consumers, there’s nothing like being able to see a product you want up close and get to know the story behind the work or how they got their start with this hobby.

The recent lockdown opened up many people to new (or abandoned) hobbies and ceramics is definitely in the top hobby trends. In 2017, Vogue mentioned that taking up pottery was “the new yoga” - alluding to the fact that working with clay can be a mindful and peaceful process.

Be sure to mark your calendars, as the market is usually run in March and November each year.
