Houtlander’s curvilinear Interdependence II bench was announced as the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa on Friday 1 March 2019 at the annual Design Indaba Conference

A total of 10 ‘candidates’ were nominated for this prestigious designation and Houtlander’s unique winding bench managed to get 20% of the total votes. The polls officially opened on Friday, 25 January 2019 and members of the public submitted their anonymous votes online.  

Most Beautiful Object in South Africa is designed to involve and engage people from all walks of life with the best of South African design, while honouring personal freedom of choice and individual sensibilities. Most Beautiful Object in South Africa’s transparent nomination and selection process encourages debate around the definition of beauty.
