If you’re anything like us, you’re already thinking about Father’s Day and actively searching for the perfect gift. And here at House & Garden, we believe that wine can be that perfect gift. But where do you even start? We’ve rounded up a few our favourite wine varieties based on personality. Now we know this is by no means an exact science, but perhaps it gives you the perfect place to start to make this Father’s Day the most memorable one yet.

While it may not be an exact science, this is a great place to start in choosing the perfect wine for Father’s Day. Image: via Unsplash

You father is extroverted and outgoing

Try Zinfandel, a sweeter wine that usually has jammy notes of cherry, plums, blackberry and black pepper. Your dad might also enjoy something a little more unusual, or with a unique story. You could try small batches or limited editions from smaller vineyards.

Your father is introverted and quiet

This calls for something bold and classic. Try Malbec which usually has strong flavours of blackberry and plum, but given weight with nuanced aromas of chocolate, violet, tobacco and leather. This type of wine also ages incredibly well, meaning if your dad wants to save it, it will only get better with time.

Your father is imaginative and creative

You might also opt to get him something completely out of the ordinary. While technically not considered classic wines, pre-blended spritzers and even innovations like sparkling red wine will not disappoint his imaginative and creative mind.

Your father practical, organised and scientific

You can't go wrong with something stately and serious. Sangiovese is just the wine. It's made with grapes colloquially known as the “workhorse” grapes of Italy, and produces a dark, earthy and heavy wine. While notes can vary from vineyard to vineyard, it often displays hints of cherry and tomatoes.

Your dad is difficult to place

Easy-going and well-rounded wines are the best option here. Without a doubt he will enjoy crowd-pleasers like Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet Sauvignon. They may be considered ordinary and simple, but remember one thing: they're global favourites for a reason: you can never go wrong.
