It’s not often that a meal lingers in your memory like a story you don’t want to end — but that’s exactly what happened the night we dined at Nikkei. We had reserved the Omakase Gold Set Menu for Two, intrigued by the promise of Japanese-Peruvian fusion. What we experienced was something far more: a night where each course revealed a different facet of this rich culinary pairing, supported by impeccable service, standout drinks, and a space that felt thoughtfully designed down to the last light fixture.
Located on Bree Street, Cape Town, Nikkei’s name itself nods to the unique cultural fusion that defines its concept — one with real historical roots. When a Peruvian ship docked at Yokohama’s port centuries ago, it sparked an exchange that would eventually blossom into an entire genre of cuisine. The dishes at Nikkei honour that shared past, bringing together Japanese finesse and Peruvian vibrancy in ways that are surprising, modern, and deeply satisfying.
The space is a physical expression of this harmony: refined, moody, and bold all at once. It’s elegant without being intimidating — with dramatic lighting, layered textures, and sculptural décor that echoes the dualities of the menu. Pops of colour offset deep, polished finishes, and the energy in the room feels curated but unforced.
And then the food begins to arrive — and it’s clear that everything has been considered.
The Omakase Gold Set Menu is a multi-course chef’s choice journey — thoughtfully paced, gorgeously plated, and full of contrasts that work because they’re grounded in intention. We started with a miso and coconut soup, velvety and aromatic, with a hint of truffle that added depth without overpowering the delicate miso. It was the perfect way to quiet the noise of the day and settle into the experience.
Next came oxtail croquettes — rich, slow-cooked meat wrapped in a perfectly crisp shell, served with truffle mayo and shaved radish. Decadent, yes, but not heavy. They were followed by a standout: crispy noodle tuna nigiri, layered with pistachio, smoked aioli, pickled cucumber, and crowned with imperial caviar. Each bite was crunchy, silky, savoury, and fresh — a layered explosion of texture and temperature.
The menu continued to dazzle. Yellowtail with fermented chilli and black garlic brought spice and umami in perfect balance, grounded by the richness of a confit egg yolk. Then came seared sesame tuna with guacamole and jalapeño ponzu — another example of how Japanese elegance and Peruvian brightness can co-exist on the same plate without competing.
The real indulgence began with the robata grill courses. The lobster tail arrived lightly charred, its natural sweetness enhanced by a zesty citrus pepper seasoning. It was smoky and tender — the kind of dish that silences conversation. Then came the Wagyu ribeye, grilled over coals, marbled to perfection, and finished with a miso-truffle glaze that bordered on the sublime. Every bite melted on the tongue.
Even the baby spinach salad was a moment — tender leaves dressed in a light truffle vinaigrette, flecked with crispy rice and thin shavings of manchego. A clever, refreshing way to bring the savoury arc to a close.
We opted for cocktails over the wine pairing and were glad we did. Our server offered guidance with an expert touch — recommending the Tokyo Skyline — luminous, floral, lightly tropical. Made with Junmai Daiginjo sake, vodka, passion fruit, vanilla, prosecco and lime, it looked like a luxury perfume and tasted like a beach sunset. It was pure delight.
The drinks menu is a treasure trove: sake cocktails, pisco infusions, Japanese spirits, fine wines, champagnes, and even a strong showing of non-alcoholic options. Whatever your preference, it’s been thought through and carefully balanced.
Service throughout was flawless. From the seamless online booking (which required zero back-and-forth) to the warm welcome on arrival, the team was engaged and enthusiastic. Staff introduced themselves by name, offered thoughtful menu advice, and checked in just enough without being overbearing. Even management made quiet rounds to ensure everything was perfect — and it was.
By the time dessert arrived — a surprise finale of textures and citrus notes — we were entirely won over. Nikkei’s Omakase Gold Set Menu is not just a luxurious night out. It’s an expression of place, history, technique, and hospitality — all delivered with style and soul.
For anyone who appreciates food as a form of art, storytelling, and celebration, Nikkei offers one of Cape Town’s most memorable dining experiences. And the gold? It’s in every detail.
