There is a brief window each year when a softer urban palette enters the streets of Johannesburg. Jacaranda trees burst into bloom, spilling purple flowers across pavements, gathering along suburban avenues and turning familiar streets into something scenic. For a city that often moves at full speed, the arrival of the blossoms is an invitation to breathe.
It is also one of the surest signs that spring has finally arrived.
At Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, the season brings with it the return of the Jacaranda Afternoon Tea, running from 1 October to - 30 November 2026. Overlooking Johannesburg’s leafy views from its position on the Westcliff ridge, the hotel provides a setting in which to appreciate the city’s annual transformation, preferably with a pot of tea and delicate treats.
This year’s menu, created by executive pastry chef Nathan Jacobs, is inspired by the colours of the jacaranda canopy. Blueberry, blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry lend their deeper hues to the sweet selection, while the savoury offerings include beetroot-cured salmon and warm butter chicken pies. Traditional afternoon tea favourites complete the spread, bringing a familiar sense of observance to a menu shaped by the season.
It is an appealing way to interpret a Joburg moment without losing sight of what makes afternoon tea enjoyable in the first place: a little indulgence, some good company, and the luxury of taking your time.
The experience is served in the Lobby Lounge & Bar, where the views stretch across the city’s urban forest. On a clear spring afternoon, the surrounding greenery offers a reminder of just how much the landscape changes when the jacarandas come into flower. Two seasonal cocktails, available during October and November, bring a further appreciation to the hues of the season.
Beyond the tea table
For those who would rather experience jacaranda season on foot, a special weekend programme on 24 and 25 October offers another way to appreciate the neighbourhood. In collaboration with Joburg In Your Pocket, the experience pairs a guided walk through Westcliff’s jacaranda-lined avenues with afternoon tea back at the hotel.
The mornings begin with tea, coffee and light refreshments before guests head out with local guides and specialists to explore the area’s history, architecture, and seasonal character. It is an opportunity to look beyond the blossoms themselves and discover more about the neighbourhoods, buildings, and streets that make up this part of Johannesburg.
Returning to the hotel afterwards, guests can continue the morning’s pace over afternoon tea, served in the lounge and on its terrace. The programme is a great way to experience the city while admiring it.
A springtime ritual worth keeping
At The Westcliff, the jacarandas provide the seasonal backdrop, but the greater pleasure is in the combination of the landscape and observance. Whether it’s approached as a catch-up with friends or a springtime outing, it offers a different perspective on a city that can sometimes be easier to navigate than to actually notice.
While the blossoms may be the occasion, it is the opportunity to slow down and enjoy Johannesburg at its most colourful that makes this time of year worth marking.
